Budweiser gets self-effacing

Five minutes of watching the World Cup on ESPN or ABC is all you need to realize the commentators suck to the point of national embarrassment. Budweiser, Ironically the "official beer of the 2006 World Cup," picked up on this in a series of ads running in the UK. They feature clueless American commentators butchering the game.

I haven't yet been able to find the series on the internet, but here's an example from the Bud website:

I agree: these World Cup commentators are awful. I was surprised to learn that the ESPN guys are calling the games from Bristol, Conn., not from Germany. Then at commercial breaks the network switches to a different crew in the studio as if to suggest that the play- by- play guys are not, in fact, just down the hall. I propose that the Beercraft guys call the games from Monty's Korner. They are as close to the action as the "experts" at ESPN.

Do you boys REALLY need commentators? I mean, can't you see what is happening yourself? I'm going to make a suggestion: turn the sound off and make your own comments, oh witty ones.

I'm very glad that the Canadian broadcasters have been using the same feed & commentators as the UK. I've watched a bit of a couple of matches on ABC for comparison, and it's just embarassing.
